Have you ever felt like your windshield-mounted portable GPS isn’t really worth using anymore? Some people are ditching them in favor of the smart phone that is always carried on their person. There is no denying that the GPS-specific devices are better at map displaying and navigation, but with emerging technology, the smart phones are catching up fast.

But there’s a new GPS out—specifically built for the recreationalist—and it’s going to be hard for any smart phone to try to replace all the features that the Magellan RoadMate RV GPS devices offer.

Besides having a big 7-inch screen and being easy to program, it has a lot of little touches that other GPS devices do not.

One, for example, is that you can refine your fuel search to specifically gas or diesel on the RoadMate RV. For a diesel owner, that is really important—especially in cities where diesel pumps are not prevalent.

Another cool feature is that you can customize your routes to the size of your rig—height, width, length, and weight can all be input to guarantee no problems with size on the programmed route to your destination.

We like the RoadMate RV9165T-LM so much that it comes on trips with us in trucks that have GPS built into the dash. There is no comparison when it comes to features, ease of use, and readability.

While the Magellan RoadMate RV was originally designed for RV (motorhome) drivers, it is great for any recreational motorist—especially guys hauling trailers with 4x4s on the back. You can input the height of your trailer’s load, the total length of your setup, and the estimated (or specific) weight of your whole package so that the RoadMate RV can customize a route that will keep you on a safe path. The RoadMate RV also features lane-assist so you do not get stuck in a bad lane at a freeway transition.

  • The large screen makes it extremely easy to view directions and maps. We find it’s also nice to have a GPS speedometer onboard when you have larger tires and modified gear ratios. The RoadMate RV comes with free updates for the life of the product, and live traffic updates to oncoming accidents and/or problem-causing events in your programmed route.
