Some of the first aftermarket fuel-injection systems date back to the mid ’80s. Sadly, most of those early retrofit units had some glitches and kept most of us from removing the carburetors from our trucks. With many of those systems improving over the years, we still had to deal with the high cost of the units and the programming headaches, which made it seem like you needed to be a certified engineer to understand.
If you have tackled the job of converting your engine from carburetor to EFI, then you already know all about the rat’s nest of wiring that often comes with the job. This is one area where the Professional Products’ Powerjection III kit shines. The unique design was made to mimic that of a classic double-pumper carburetor and even has the same mounting dimensions as a 4150-style carburetor. The design incorporates not only the injectors into the throttle body housing, but also the entire engine management system (EMS). By having both of these components in the same place, there is no need to run wires across your engine bay to provide the link. This reduces installation time tremendously. Ken Farrel, one of Professional Products (PP) designers, explained: We wanted to make something that was very simple to install, easy to setup, and worked well for the customer. The built-in EMS is constantly sampling the air/fuel ratio more than 100 times per second from the oxygen sensor to adjust air/fuel going into the engine. It’s a self-learning system that never stops adjusting itself to compile the best fuel map for your vehicle at any given time. It will even learn to adapt itself to your driving style just like EMS systems found in new OEM vehicles.
When it is time to address your fuel system, PP gives you two options: returnless and return-style. Many fuel systems are set up using a return line that brings extra fuel from the pressure regulator under the hood back into the fuel tank, which controls pressure by adjusting how much fuel passes the system and returns to the tank. A returnless setup has no return line, only one fuel supply line from the tank to the system. You can purchase this kit to run either setup.
It only takes a few parameters to set up using any laptop, then the Powerjection III will adjust itself. There are almost infinite changes at your disposal, which can help you achieve any setting you desire and aid in both fuel economy and performance.
