A big set of dual, 8-inch round HID off-road lamps would be awesome, but who's got $1,200 laying around these days? For many of us, the dream of owning HID lamps is just that; a thought we wake up from the following day. If you can't get your hands on a friend's credit card, we suggest looking into this alternative, HID conversion headlamp kits. For the money, you won't get this much bang for your buck elsewhere. In order to do this properly, we needed to start with a popular light. The Hella Rallye 4000 lamp is one of the most commonly used lights running around the desert today. It's a big, bright, 8-inch lamp that is fairly inexpensive (about $100 per light) and already adorns many off-road rides. Baja HID sells their Xentec HID kit for around $100 giving you the ability to upgrade to a pair of HID lights for only $200! 1. This is the conversion kit straight from Baja HID out of the box. Included are installation instructions, wiring, ballast and HID bulb. Baja HID gives you the option to choose what color temperature bulb you would like to run. A 3,000K (Kelvin) bulb will put off a yellow hue and a 5,000K bulb will produce a bright white hue. We chose to install the kit with 5,000K bulbs.1. The rubber grommet that comes with the Baja HID wiring is round, but the Hella housing opening is rectangular. In order to make it work and seal properly, we cut the Hella plug in half, which allowed us to run the Hella rectangular plug with the wires through the center.7. The conversion should take you less time than it did to remove and remount the lights to your truck. In under an hour and $200 later, we now have upgraded our halogen lights to a perfect set of HID lights on our ride. As far as mounting the ballast, go ahead and mount it wherever it is convenient on your truck. We ended up mounting ours to the backside of our skid plate.8. That's all there is to it.
