Put enough years and abuse on your truck, and parts are going to fail. Our '97 Chevy 1500 has been seriously used and abused over the years, but is slowly making a comeback with the help of some great aftermarket components. When we first picked up the truck it had a tough time turning over without some moaning and groaning. The spark plugs and wires we added a few months back helped, but didn't complete the cure. With the MSD 6A ignition box now installed with the help of Brea Auto Electric, our ride is purring on startup like a kitten. How The 6a Will Help You The MSD 6A features a capacitive discharge ignition design. Most stock ignition systems are inductive ignitions. In an inductive ignition, the coil must store and step up the voltage to maximum strength in between each firing. At higher rpm, when there is less time to charge the coil to full capacity, the voltage falls short of reaching maximum energy, which results in a loss of power or top end miss. The MSD ignition features a capacitor, which is quickly charged with 460 to 480 volts and stores it until the ignition is triggered. With the capacitive discharge design, the voltage sent to the coil is always at full power even at high rpm. Basically, with this system in place, you get constant full power ignition spark all the time. 1. Each 6A comes with a CARB-approved sticker to place in your engine bay. 2. Removing the 6A from its box can be a little daunting to a novice electrician. There are a handful of wires leaving the box and wiring schematics often leave even the best of us bewildered. This MSD to GM Single Coil Harness (PN8877) helped us complete our installation in less than 30 minutes. This harness is designed to provide a splice-free and simple install of the 6A to GM vehicles equipped with a three terminal single connector coil.2. This is the kind of quality you can expect from this shop. No cutting corners, no wads of wiring zip-tied all over the engine bay, and no loose connections. All of the wires leading away from the 6A were modified to the appropriate length for our truck. Each connection was soldered and then wrapped with heat shrink for a perfect, clean connection.3. The harness made the 6A install very simple to install. Mount the box, run your power wire, secure your ground wire, and connect the harness to the factory GM coil, and you're done.4.
