  • Two years ago, during a trip to Moab, the front hub ran out of grease, froze, caught fire, and ate through the caliper. We were lucky to have gotten to the side of the road without crashing and without the truck burning down.

  • At this year's TDS event in Ocotillo Wells, California, the sector shaft of the steering box snapped in half on this same Super Duty. Too bad it happened in a windy canyon. Oh, and the driver side stub shaft's ears broke at the same time. Bummer.

  • When a BMW ran a stop sign and hit a taxi, we weren't far behind in the '02 Chevy you might occasionally see in the mag. It snapped the center pin on the leaf spring, pulled the driveshaft slip yoke out of the transfer case, and destroyed the bedside. The insurance company called it a "total," but all it took was one new centerpin, fiberglass bedsides, and the truck was good to go again.

  • With a crescent wrench, a ratchet strap, and a SOG multitool, the truck's rear driveshaft was removed, axle repositioned, and we were pulling into the office parking lot in front-wheel drive within 20 minutes of the accident.

  • On a trip north a while back, our recently resurrected project Blazer snapped a coilover in half when the four-link's jam nuts came loose the axle walked out to the side. We fixed it and kept going by stripping a Hi-Lift jack and using it's I-beam in place of the coilover.

  • Our big project Cherokee, Matilda, had a little issue at the Jasper Engines Charity poker run in February. Both rear blocks broke and crumbled, allowing the rear axle to rotate up, snapping the U-joint straps and damaging the driveshaft. It took two anchor Jeeps and three winches to get it up and out of a canyon. Just another day on the job.

  • Tie rods aren't the only things that suffer when off-roading trucks with big tires. We found the tire and wheel (still attached to the knuckle) in the truck bed.
