It's not like you never heard the name "Hella" before. It's been on race trucks and performance vehicles for as long as most of us can remember. Hella's halogen off-road light line has forever been some of the best-bang-for-your-buck lights on the market, and its Xenon series high-intensity discharge (HID) lights have been top quality for years. But there was always the pesky problem of finding a place to mount the external ballast that came with the HID auxiliary lights. Thankfully, the technology has finally come that has allowed Hella to move to an internal ballast design without raising the cost of the light. We checked them against a friend's original external ballast Hella HIDs, and the light output seemed the same. In other words, don't go run out and buy these internal ballast lights if you already have the Hella HIDs, but the new design is definitely a welcomed upgrade and makes mounting these lights that much easier.

Since we had a Hella 8-inch halogen Rallye 4000 laying around, we figured we'd show you the stock headlights, against a single halogen Rallye 4000, against a single Xenon Rallye 4000. We shot pictures on a high aperature setting-so high you can't even see the stock headlights working in the photos, but the obvious advantage of the HID 4000 is clear over its halogen brethren.
The Rallye 4000i internal... The Rallye 4000i internal ballast light is a 35-watt high-intensity discharge (HID) light. When turning on, there is a power spike that takes a few more amps, but most of the time each Rallye 4000i will run on around 4 amps (as will most 35-watt HID lights). The red design ring around the 8-inch glass face is standard, but chrome rings can be ordered as well. A stone shield is also available, and is necessary to be legal on the highways in some states. | The ballast of the new Rallye... The ballast of the new Rallye 4000i is internal. This makes the housing of this light slightly deeper than the halogen Rallye 4000, but the extra inch or two in depth is well worth the light output. There is no more need for finding a mounting spot for some external ballast. | The famous 8-inch Hella 4000... The famous 8-inch Hella 4000 housing was redesigned for this new light. The new bracket design keeps the matt-black die-cast zinc housing extremely stable, and allows for easy positioning. |
