The list of aftermarket modifications available for UTVs seems to get larger every year. With the addition of a suspension lift for our RZR came larger tires, too. Those upgrades (along with the weight of our ever-growing beer guts) put more stress on the stock rack and pinion steering system. After a few close calls on dirt fire trails from a heavy right foot and sloppy steering, we knew it was time for a beefier system. We soon found that Unisteer Performance Products' Rackzilla rack and pinion kit for the Polaris RZR had everything we were looking for in a quality, bolt-on replacement. We had Xtreme Unlimited in Oceano, California, complete the install, and in about 30 minutes. Granted, this is an accomplished shop with prior experience, but we think you might be able to do yours in under an hour.
At first we thought this was... At first we thought this was a rebuilt rack and pinion unit because it looked so close to the factory one. But upon closer inspection, we realized that this is an entirely new rack and pinion. The Rackzilla features a 24mm rack shaft (compared to the stock 21mm and 1/2-inch steel mounting brackets (compared to the factory cast aluminum ones). The tie rods on the Rackzilla are 0.625 inches (larger than the stock 0.590-inch ones). | When the steering was last... When the steering was last installed on this RZR, it was done incorrectly. Notice the bent threaded end of the stock tie rod that went into the extension provided with the long-arm suspension previously installed on this RZR. The tie rod bent because the tie rod end was supposed to be installed below the spindle, and it was therefore not parallel with the suspension (which put more force on the tie rod). Since we used a rack meant for an RZRS on a normal RZR, we are getting rid of the steering extensions as they are no longer needed since the tie rods are longer on this RZRS rack (the RZRS is already wider from the factory). | We removed stock rack, and... We removed stock rack, and installed the new rack. The new Rackzilla rack and pinion installs into stock location. Unfortunately, the space between the cabin and the front diff on a UTV is very tight, and made for horrible pictures. We apologize. |
The Unisteer Rackzilla rack... The Unisteer Rackzilla rack and pinion has two adjustments for the steering..... | ......The tie rods thread... ......The tie rods thread in next to the rack and the outer tie rod ends at the spindle thread on as well..... | ....This gives a good amount... ....This gives a good amount of adjustment. |
Make sure to install the tie... Make sure to install the tie rod end below the spindle. If you install it above the spindle, it will no longer be parallel with the A-arms and therefore create some bumpsteer. | How'd We Like It? Once on,... How'd We Like It? Once on, the new Unisteer rack and pinion made our RZR's steering feel smoother from full crank left to full crank right. We also noticed there was not as much kickback in the wheel when we hit something with the tires. It only took us about an hour to install and was a good way to improve the handling characteristics of our RZR. | |
