Knowledge About Overdrives 35 Inch Nitto Terra Grappler
That's a 35-inch Nitto Terra Grappler on the front, and a 33-inch Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ on the rear. Going up in tire size can drop your engine rpm by several hundred revolutions per minute. We were test-fitting the 35-inch tire on the front of this 4Runner, and ended up staying with 33s, as the smaller tires fit with the fewest vehicle modifications.

Knowledge About Overdrives Ring And Pinion Sets
Changing your ring and pinion sets to a higher ratio can drop your highway rpm and increase your top speed, but just like adding bigger tires, every transmission gear will be higher. If you've got a wide-ratio tranny, it's not a problem. If you don't have a wide-ratio, you might lose too much low-speed crawling ability or lose your towing power. In that case, you're better off swapping in a different tranny, or adding a bolt-on overdrive unit.

Knowledge About Overdrives Heat Is Arch Enemy
Heat is the arch-enemy of automatic transmissions. Unlike engine oil, there's no trouble created by over-cooling automatic tranny fluid. Stock vehicles run the transmission fluid through a heat exchanger in the radiator, but that's not always enough cooling. We'd recommend using a stand-alone transmission cooler instead.....

Knowledge About Overdrives Heat Is Arch Enemy 2
......Tranny coolers can be mounted in several locations, such as in front of the radiator, behind the cab, or under the floor. Run the biggest cooler you can. Make sure your tranny cooler is protected from damage and can receive enough air flow.

Knowledge About Overdrives Orange County Transmissions
To gain some more wisdom, we headed over to Orange County Transmissions. Owner Dave Dibs informed us: "The type of transmission used should be determined by the total vehicle package. You wouldn't want to put a weak transmission behind a high-horsepower engine and expect to be able to tow with it. You need to make sure that the total package works together for reliability and performance. For instance, if you have a well-built Ford V-8 backed up by a C-4 transmission and a Gear Vendors overdrive, that wouldn't be a balanced drivetrain package because the C-4 would be the weak link in that chain. We can offer our customers upgraded overdrive automatics, or bolt a Gear Vendors unit on behind an upgraded three-speed. We've had people come over and ask for a Gear Vendors behind an overdrive tranny. We can do it all." This is a 4L80-E set into a work fixture.

Knowledge About Overdrives Fully Hydraulic Valve Bodies
In place of the fully hydraulic valve bodies of the past, the 4L80-E uses electronically-activated solenoids. "The electronic control lets the shifting be optimized for several factors," Dibs told us. "Altitude, internal heat levels, and the load levels on the vehicle can all be compensated for with electronic control."
