Leveling kits have become an extremely popular upgrade for the late model half-ton pickup owner in the past few years, because it is an inexpensive way to remove the factory rake and fit larger-than-stock tires without buying a full lift kit. Unlike typical leveling kits that use either a strut extender or spring preload spacer, the Bilstein 5100 leveling shock is a complete replacement shock. While the strut extender type of leveling kit can cause ball-joint bind and the preload spacer a loss of down travel, Bilstein has addressed these issues with the 5100 leveling shock and created a product that is a great solution. The 5100 leveling shock is designed to maximize wheel travel adding 1 to 2 inches of overall travel without inducing any ball-joint or driveline bind. The Bilstein unit also offers better dampening and rebound control than the stock shock to compensate for the added spring preload used to level the truck.
