Prelude to a Test - Nitto Terra Grappler Tire Review

Nitto Terra Grappler and Pro Comp Xtreme Alloy Series 1059 Overview

Want a quick way to change your truck's personality? A new wheel-and-tire combination is one of the easiest and best ways to fortify your truck for the dirt and for the road that leads to the dirt.

Far from a mere aluminum-and-rubber donut bolted to an axle, your truck's wheels and tires are often the difference between a fun off-road foray and an exercise in misery. Think about it. If your tires are grippy enough, you'll make it all the way through the trail in time to drive home in the daylight. No grip? You'll spend the day and probably part of the night slippin' and slidin' and diggin' and winchin'. If your tires are strong enough, they'll take you all the way from home to the trail and back again without ripping, tearing, shredding, or otherwise going flat. Weak tires self-destruct when the going gets nasty. Weak wheels? Weak wheels will crack, bend, or otherwise fail at the most inopportune time, again slowing your off-road trip to a crawl, or if you're out crawlin' you'll be slowed to a complete halt. Bottom line? Better rolling stock is more fun.

We'll be giving this wheel-and-tire combo a real-world, on-truck, off-road test very soon. In the meantime, we'd like to begin by highlighting the best features of the Nitto Terra Grappler tire and Pro Comp's Xtreme Alloy Series 1059 wheel. Remember, better rolling stock is more fun.

  • We thought it was impressive that an 80-pound tire-and-wheel combo could be brought into perfect balance with a measly 2 ounces of strategically placed weight. This attests to the high-quality manufacturing used to produce both tire and wheel.

  • We like the classic looks of Pro Comp's Xtreme Alloy Series 1059 wheels. The classic "holes" pattern in the wheel's center is accented by an outer lip that's thoroughly present-day. We're using 16x8s. These wheels are cast using state-of-the-art "low-pressure" casting technology that results in a wheel that's as high in strength as it is in value. The 1059s are available in 15-, 16-, 17-, 18-, and 20-inch diameters in most standard offsets and bolt patterns.

  • When is 33 inches not really 33 inches? When you're talking tire sizes. Most tires listed as 33s measure about 32 inches in diameter, depending on the brand. It's not a problem; it's just the nature of the beast. This set of Nittos measures closer to 33 inches, at 32-1/2 inches in diameter. We've found that Nitto tires are usually true-to-size or very close. Our test tires are the metric equivalent of 33s. We're using 305/70R16s.

  • These tires have a feel to them that is best described as "substantial." They're tangibly high-quality, robust, and even a tad heavy. The substantial feel is a direct result of the Terra Grappler's 10-ply rating, which enables the 'Grapplers to carry an "E" load range. The 305/70R16 Terra Grappler is rated to carry 3,525 pounds at each corner when inflated to 65 psi. This load capacity means the 'Grapplers can be bolted to larger, heavier trucks and SUVs or used for load hauling or towing heavier loads than tires of equal size that have a lower load rating. Bottom line: These donuts have the right specs to be tough tires.

  • An up-close look at the 'Grappler's tread shows its personality and intended use. Although the Terra Grappler is not intended to be a mud tire, alternating profiles on the shoulder blocks are designed to shed mud. Generous siping gives added ability in rainy or snowy conditions. The uniform shape of the crown and spacing between the blocks (void ratio) suggests a tire that's quiet on the street, yet retains off-road grip that's good in a variety of situations. From hardpack to sand to the whooped-out, rocky roads of the Mojave, to the roads there and back, we fully expect these tires to shine once we put them through their paces during a real-world test. Stay tuned.
