We blew into Winchester Bay on a lazy Thursday afternoon at the invitation of Joe Mirvis of the Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce. By the time you finish reading this story and seeing all the airtime, we're guessing you'll be humming the Dukes of Hazzard theme song. Clearfield is located in the heart of Pennsylvania over 100 miles from any major cities. So, what do you do for fun way out here? Hit the dirt of course! Borrowing Freedom Raceway is a private property corn and hay field that turns itself into a drag strip, obstacle course, ATV barrel race, and even a corn maze for the kids during parts of the year. We snapped more than 1,000 pictures of racing, breaking, smashing, and splashing, as well as some local flavor - which made it hard to choose the photos that went in this story. Snore Battle At Primm

Held in Primm, Nevada, the SNORE BAP kicked off its 2009 series with a huge bang! With record entries, over 70 vehicles entered in class 1450 alone, this race was the one to watch. The race was held on a 12-mile race course which encompassed open desert, grandstand infield, and parts of the Primm CORR track. Competitors ran multiple laps of the course over two days. We can't wait for next year!

Drive Trophy Lite 200

It is true! A new sanctioning body has joined the ranks of the off-road racing elite. The new series is called the Drive Off-Road Racing series. Drive will be holding six events in the Plaster City OHV near San Diego California. The first race of the season was the Trophy Lite 200 and commanded a pretty sizeable entry list for their first race ever. We look forward to a great year with Drive!

Turning away fans before the night is over because of a sold out venue, is my prediction before the end of the 2009 season. It's never happened in Short Course Racing history, but, if I were to put money on it, I'd say 2009 is the year, and the Mickey Thompson/Kalgard Lubricants SXS Stadium Series is the place.

The final race of the 2008 MORE racing series was held in Barstow, California. It was a tough course and in the end only the strong survived. It was truly a great way to end the year. By the time you read this, the 2009 MORE racing series will be underway, be sure to check out the action on March 21, 2009 in Barstow.

Each and every vehicle entered in the 2009 King of the Hammers race was required to go though Tech Inspection. Held the day before the race, after the LCQ, this is where all vehicles were equipped with a satellite tracker, each driver given the opportunity to sign up for contingencies, and each rig given the once over to be sure it was safe for competition.

Thursday, February 26th 2009, 38 drivers and rigs from all across the nation lined up at the starting line to take on the grueling 2-mile King of the Hammers Last Chance Qualifier loop that included high speed desert whoops and gnarly rock crawling up the famous Back Door trail. The top 14 competitors to finish the LCQ earned a spot in the 2009 King of the Hammers Race.

BITD Golden West Cycle Las Vegas "150"

Truly a one of a kind race, the Golden West Cycle "150" brings Quads, UTVs, and Trophy Lites together for a day of awesome racing! Held in the town of Jean, Nevada, the race is a 36-mile loop with the number of laps varying by class. Turn out was amazing, and racing action was great! We can't wait for next year!

We had coordinated our chase coverage such that we would swing back to La Rumorosa in plenty of time to pit one or both of the Afraidium Racing UTVs. Making our way back by the military checkpoint and the toll road we traveled back over the mountain pass. We found even the toll booth workers liked race stickers, though it seemed they bought us no toll discount.

We were outside of Phoenix and were headed to points west and south. Our caravan consisted of a couple of pickups, a trailer with a race UTV, and a well-seasoned Isuzu NPR turbo diesel box truck. Our destination for the next several days was Ensenada, Mexico and the Baja Peninsula. Our small group was to meet up with the rest of the support and race team that was preparing to tackle the pinnacle event in off-road racing.

Gosh, we're glad there are guys like Adam Filbin, all the volunteers, and organizations like Clean-Dezert taking care of our lands and actually doing the dirty work instead of just talking about it, pointing fingers, or donating money in hopes that someone else will do it. Don't get us wrong, the money definitely helps, but manpower is most important in making a difference on a local level. As off-roaders and lovers of the outdoors, we all owe a great debt to the ones who take time out of their lives to make sure that someone is picking up after other members of our society who are perhaps a bit more careless. We felt lucky to participate and cover Clean-Dezert's 2008 Barstow Desert Clean-Up. And we have to give a special thanks to all those volunteers who drove out for the day, offering their time and trucks to help assist in the removal of trash we found in the deserts just outside Barstow, California. Though the majority of trash was from people who specifically brought it out here to dump, there was more trash than we wanted to find left by a few careless campers. Remember that you can lose a lot of trash in an instant if high winds pick up, so remember to always secure your trash in a wind-resistant way whenever camping.

Last September we made our second annual trip to the Oceano Sand Dunes (formerly known as Pismo Sand Dunes, but we still refer to the area as Pismo) for a weekend of relaxation and fun, on the beach and in the sun. It's the best time of the year at the dunes. Summer has ended, the large crowds of tourists have returned to school and to work, and the weather is still sunny and warm. The couple months right after summer are absolutely the nicest times of the year at Pismo.

Every year, we try to hit up every off-road show that we can. Unfortunately, this only equates to about a third of them, but we're stoked to be able to make it to even that many. One show we never end up missing is the Sand Sports Super Show. But then again, that could be because we live about 20 minutes from the O.C. Fairgrounds where it's held every year... . But even if it were hours away, we think we'd still make the trek to get out and see the sand show. And 2008's show was the biggest yet, which was really great to see. We weren't sure how the current economic bump in the off-road industry was going to play out in terms of attendance at this year's show, so it was really great to see so many heads checking out what's new.

August 23, 2008The Best in the Desert TSCO Vegas to Reno race is touted as being the longest off-road race in the United States. This year's V2R race started just outside of the small town of Beatty, Nevada, and ended near Reno, Nevada, covering approximately 450 miles. Rick Johnson took the overall win in his General Tires #71 Trick Truck with a time of 7 hours 41 minutes. Congrats Rick!
