Ed MacBride of Woodbridge, Virginia, has a motto: "If it ain't big, why build it?" Forty-four-inch tires aren't practical for all of us, but they sure are if your style of off-roading is mashing your way through deep mud pits where power and size make all the difference. His '70 Chevy pickup truck sports an 8-inch Skyjacker suspension, SM465 transmission, 205 transfer case, 14-bolt rear stuffed with a Detroit Locker and 5:13 gears, and Dana 60 front axle with matching components and 35-spline axleshafts.

Under the hood, Ed chose a Chevy 350ci engine with roller rockers and a Pete Jackson geardrive. The pickup also boasts a set of Trick Flow headers, Flowmaster mufflers, and a PerTronix distributor. Ed got creative and built his bumpers and ladder bars himself, giving him protection all around.

Still Need To Drive It Home

Transporting off-road vehicles on a trailer is becoming a more and more popular practice these days; however, there is still much to be said for the average Joe who abuses his daily driver on the trails just as much the owner of a trailered rig does. Scott Deetch of Taylorsville, Kentucky, does just that with his '99 Jeep Wrangler. He decided to load up the family and head to the annual mud run put on by a friend of his every summer. Although his ride wasn't as highly modified as some of the other competitors, he did well and was able to get his family back home safely. His modifications include an OME suspension, OME shocks, Rubicon Express replacement arms, 33-inch BFG M-T tires, a Powertrax front locker, Poison Spider corners and skidplates, and a complete custom cage.
