Chevy Silverado 1500 Plan B Camper

For many of us, our off-road vehicle is a stress reliever. It gives us the freedom to get away from the daily grind, enjoy some solitude, and take in the beauty of nature. Who wouldn’t love to just “bug out” at a moment’s notice with a vehicle designed to go almost anywhere and set up camp in a few seconds? That’s exactly what Randy Noborikawa had in mind when he set out to build the ultimate exploration and camping vehicle. Randy’s 4x4 Chevy 1500 WT is brimming with the best parts and custom, top-notch fabrication crafted by the talented crew at Blitzkrieg Motorsports, but is still subtle enough to park on the street and blend into traffic without drawing too much attention. The casual observer might mistake it for a fleet vehicle or service truck, completely unaware of its hidden potential. That suits Randy just fine. He spends his working hours creating stunning graphic designs for clients; for his own truck he wanted something minimal that was devoid of bold colors and corporate logos.

Randy was able to demonstrate the true nature of his truck on the way to our photo shoot. We were both stranded in traffic for almost two hours due to an accident ahead that blocked all lanes of the freeway. Unable to get through the pass, we instead headed into a nearby canyon. The pavement soon ended in a nasty, rocky, and rutted road. Randy’s Blitzkrieg suspension and King shocks kept up just fine as we climbed at a brisk pace for the condition of the road. This so-called road eventually merged into a wash comprised of polished white gravel and large boulders. As we climbed out of our trucks, our lungs were filled with crisp, fresh, pine scented air. The surrounding hills were shrouded in mist and covered in a light dusting of fresh snow.

Although we had ruined the careful detail job on the truck, we had switched to plan B at a moment’s notice, transforming what could have been a cancelled photo shoot into a fun daytrip in the mountains. This is exactly what Randy had in mind when he built the truck. This unique Silverado is a comfortable base camp for any type of adventure and is right at home on a snowy, mountain trail, a remote beach, or running miles of rocky desert back roads. OR

  • The Silverado’s six-speed automatic and 5.7L aluminum V-8 are stock except for the Gibson headers that attach to a custom mandrel-bent exhaust system built by Blitzkrieg. The dual exhaust system dumps just after the 50 Series Flowmaster mufflers. The simple, yet strong shock tower brace that straddles the engine is removable for maintenance if necessary.

  • The front suspension is a stunning example of Blitzkrieg’s quality design and fabrication skills. The 4WD long-travel kit uses a bevy of King Shocks products that bolt to Blitzkrieg’s weld-on mounts including a 2.5 coilover shock with remote reservoir, a 2.5 externally-adjustable bypass shock with piggyback reservoir and a 2.0 hydraulic bumpstop. The kit supplies 15 inches of wheel travel from the fabricated 4130 upright that pivots on 1-inch uniballs and accepts the factory four wheel drive hubs. The boxed section upper and lower A-arms bolt to the factory mounts. Steering is done by gusseted, tubular tie-rods with heavy-duty Heim ends. Custom length axle shafts are turned by inboard 930 CV joints for added strength and reliability.

The shocks are mounted horizontally to a fabricated cage on one end and box section pivots on the other. Custom links run vertically from the pivots to the factory rear housing. When used with the Deaver, F87 spring packs it delivers 17 inches of wheel travel and ample articulation.
