2008 Toyota Tacoma - Diabolical Toy

Tacoma Twist

We all remember our first truck, but we’d be willing to bet it wasn’t anything quite like JD McEntire’s dual-purpose prerunner Tacoma. JD wanted his first truck to handle gnarly terrain at high speeds while still being a fully functional truck. JD entrusted SMP Fabworks in Sun Valley, California, to turn his Tacoma into a solid prerunner that could be driven hard while still being comfortable to drive on a daily basis. SMP Fabworks has built some of the best off-road rigs around so it’s no surprise they had JD’s truck built in just five months. Suffice it to say this Tacoma works flawlessly off road!

We caught up with JD’s Tacoma at Gorman on the California Grapevine for an early-morning photo session in the mountains. SMP Fabworks did their homework when it came to dialing in the bypass shocks as they absorbed even the largest of whoops without skipping a beat. With a menacing stance one thing’s for sure: This Tacoma is definitely no trailer queen! OR

  • The Total Chaos long-travel suspension along with the Sway-A-Way 2.5 coilovers and double-bypass shocks allow the front suspension to cycle 16 inches of wheel travel. All we can say is that the combination works incredibly well off -road.

  • SMP Fabworks built the custom 1.75-inch front bumper and skid plate in case any rocks wanted to hop a ride on this Tacoma. Halo projector beams light up the night in case JD decides to tear up the dirt at night.

  • The DMZ long-travel rear suspension allows the Tacoma to fly through the whoops at high speeds while the DMZ shackles allow the suspension to droop-out when it catches big air. The Sway-A-Way 18-inch stroke triple-bypass shocks allow the rear suspension to cycle 17 inches of wheel travel making this Tacoma a serious off road machine.

  • JD wanted his truck to be functional so SMP Fabworks retained the use of the factory 110-volt power outlet and tied it into the new bed floor. They also boxed the rear frame rails to handle constant abuse.

  • The SMP Fabworks custom 1.75-inch bed cage houses a full-sized spare and even has a small bed to carry a cooler or tools for long off road trips. The rear Sway-A-Way triple-bypass shocks tie into the bed cage out of harm’s way. SMP also fabricated the custom 2-inch rear bumper and painted it copper metallic to match the front Total Chaos lower A-arms. The exhaust is spent from a throaty 2.25-inch straight pipe with a turn down before the rear axle.

  • The fiberglass on this Tacoma gives it an evil look that gives a hint of what this truck is capable of off road. Fiberwerx front fenders give the added clearance to stuff the 35-inch tires at full compression. Glassworks Unlimited fiberglass bedsides give this Tacoma a distinctly evil appearance while allowing the rear tires to clear throughout their travel.

  • The 3.5-inch-wider Total Chaos long-travel suspension with the spindle upgrade and Heim-joint upper control arm mounts allow this Tacoma to fly through endless whoops. The suspension uses uniballs that allow it to cycle through its travel without any bind issues. Sway-A-Way 2.5 coilovers and double-bypass shocks smooth out even the roughest sections while the Sway-A-Way 2.0 hydraulic bumpstops keep the truck floating through the jumps.

  • Yes, that is a little ice the tire is rolling through. Even in Southern California you can find freezing temperatures. The 35-inch Pro Comp Xtreme All Terrain tires ensure this Tacoma isn’t at a loss for traction while the 17-inch OMF beadlocks keep the tires on the rims when aired down.
