This sleek silver Dodge Ram built by Atomic Motorsports in San Diego, California, has been dubbed the AMRAM 17x2. For those of you who are unaware, AMRAAM is a missile system used by the United States and her allies to keep our skies safe. The acronym stands for Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile. It's touted as offering unprecedented performance in a cost-effective package and being able to be launched day or night in any weather. The same is true for this Dodge Ram 1500 prerunner.

Atomic's goal from the beginning was to build a capable truck that still had good manners on the street and didn't break the bank. The truck handles the terrain easily with 17 inches of wheel travel front and rear. The front rides on a modified CST spindle and fabricated upper and lower A-arms that are 4.5 inches longer than stock. The front suspension is damped by a 2.5 coilover, 2.5 external bypass shock, and a hydraulic bumpstop.

It's a tight squeeze but the custom intake tube snakes around the engine brace to a hat on top of the Edelbrock carburetor. An engine 'cage ties the tops of each shock hoop together to add rigidity to the front end.

The rear suspension relies on a custom set of National leaf springs that are damped by 3.0 triple-bypass shocks and a hydraulic bumpstop as well. The rear springs are located by custom Atomic shackles and held in check by a two-link trailing arm setup that prevents axle wrap when the power is belted out of the 400hp, 360ci Dodge V-8.

The 360 is loaded with high performance goodies including a hot cam, decked "Mag Ram" heads, stainless roller rockers, Clevite bearings, a Hughes lower plenum and throttle body and Accell injectors all held together by high strength ARP fasteners. The 400 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque are handled by a TCI torque converter and the factory transmission. Spent gasses are scavenged by a set of Gibson headers that connect to an Atomic-built mandrel-bent 3-inch exhaust with dual Borla mufflers that dumps out just in front of the rear tires.

  • The front suspension uses boxed tubing upper and lower A-arms that cycle 17 inches. A 2.5 inch coilover, 2.5 bypass shock, and hydraulic bumpstop take care of the damping. The shock shaft on the coilover is protected by a Dirt Bagz brand protective sleeve that fits over the coil.

  • The rear suspension uses custom-wrapped National leaf springs in a spring-under configuration. The limit straps prevent the weight of the suspension pulling on the shocks at full extension. The bracket that holds the anti-wrap, trailing arm doubles as a shock mount. The rear bumpstops are mounted into the frame rail.

Speaking of tires, the truck rides on 37x13.50R17 Toyo, Open Country mud terrain tires that are wrapped around a set of heavy duty TrailReady, true beadlock wheels that are as strong as they are beautiful. Two additional spares are carried in the Atomic-built bed cage that also incorporates the upper shock mounts for the King bypass shocks.

Tucked into the corner of the bed is a Red Top Optima battery secured by a Camburg battery tray. The truck leads the way with an Atomic-built bumper and skidplate that protect the front end of the truck as well as the pair of Soltek, Baja Designs HID lights. The entire package works flawlessly, just as intended. The Glassworks fiberglass fenders and bedsides blend seamlessly into the body and along with the factory silver paint give the truck a subtle unassuming look. Just like the AMRAAM that the truck is named after, you might not see this truck coming until it's too late.
