Mike Maddux is a welder and fabricator by trade, but he lives on a ranch in the central coast of California, miles off of any paved road, where he needs a truck that will smoothly eat up dirt roads at high speed while still being able to haul a bag of feed or a mess of tools. His truck of choice? A 2003 Toyota Tundra Extra Cab with a long-travel front end and a bed that still has some storage space. Maddux has had the truck built this way for a few years now, and it's proved to be a great vehicle for all-around recreation, daily-driving, and for prerunning and chasing during race season.

But being the owner of a fab shop like Central Coast Prerunners (CCP) would almost force one to go further. The truck lacks a full rollcage-something it should definitely have-and the Tundra's race prerunning duties are starting to require a bit more suspension. Therefore, Maddux has designed is own Tundra long-travel kit that CCP will be releasing soon. His truck will be the first to get the suspension, and he'll be adding a stealthy interior rollcage to protect him and his family.

When the CCP Tundra kit is done, we'll have to check back in with Mike and see what they've come up with. Stay tuned.

The custom Central Coast Prerunners spare tire carrier and rear bumper attaches to the bed cage for support, and Maddux made a trick quick-release to remove the spare tire when the truck gets a flat.

  • Mike Maddux had to sport his own design in bumpers, and added a CCP simple prerunner tube and skidplate to the front end. He stuck Hella 4000 lights on the front and added HID retrofit kits to each light to make himself some inexpensive (but very effective) HID lights.

  • Glassworks Unlimited rear bedsides, front fenders and hood adorn this truck. The hood was probably the most effective loss of weight. Fiberglass is great for opening up the fenderwell and extra tire coverage, but you don't really drop much weight (over factory steel) unless you remove the inner bed and the front inner wheelwells-something that takes your daily-driven truck and makes it much more single-purposed.

  • The Total Chaos long-travel kit is nice because it fits both 2WD and 4WD trucks. Chaos can supply 4WD customers with new heat-treated shafts to use with the factory CVs. The kit comes with upper and Lower A-arms that use uniballs and widen the front end 3.5 inches per side. The front end floats on King coilovers with 700-pound-per-inch single-rate coils.
