Working at a shop like All Industries Performance, Chris Jones is used to dealing with modified machines that take a little more skill to operate than the average passenger car. That's why it was no surprise to his family when he dropped off his 2002 Chevy 2500 HD at Off Road Unlimited in Burbank, California, and let them go to town on it right when he got it. To this day, Chris still uses the truck for work, play, and as a daily driver. He's never had any problems with the front end, and though his 38-inch Parnelli Jones Dirt Grips are getting low on tread, they show very little signs of drivetrain and suspension fatigue that would improperly wear tire tread, meaning that his 3/4-ton IFS front end is still holding strong.

 | Up front on the HD Chevy,... Up front on the HD Chevy, Off Road Unlimited used dual Fox 2.0 remote reservoir shocks on both sides. ORU fabbed their own shock hoops to make these shocks fit, and the valving was done so that both heavy-duty shocks could work together and not ride too stiffly. Chris got the suspension done before "knuckle" kits were really prevalent yet, so this truck has a dropped upper A-arm as well. When you think about it, this allowed him to run longer dual shocks in front than he'd be able to if he left the upper arm in the stock location. | The rear 14 Bolt is nothing... The rear 14 Bolt is nothing to worry about with 38-inch tires. That rear end could handle much more tire. Even so, Chris had ORU drop its aluminum diff cover onto the axle to keep everything a little cooler when towing. He runs matching dual Fox shocks in the rear to absorb the oscillations of the Atlas springs. |
Up front, Chris opted for... Up front, Chris opted for the front skidplate that protects the important stuff and had an ORU light bar added to hold three Piaa auxiliary lights. | We love the old Weld Typhoon... We love the old Weld Typhoon wheels and the cool Parnelli Jones Dirt grip tires, but Chris doomed himself a long time ago by getting 16.5-inch wheels after some friends' bad advice. Sorry Chris, we think you might have to upgrade wheels the next time you change out tires. It's getting very hard to find 38-inch tires with a 16.5-inch wheel size. | |
