2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Flexed-Out Grand Cherokee

A Trail Stomping Long Arm WJ

Photography by

We've all thought the same thing after hitting a trail for the first time: "How can I make my rig handle better off-road?" Jim Brunett was no exception. Realizing he needed more suspension flex than the factory offered in the Grand Cherokee, he took his WJ over to Jeeps R Us for a much needed off-road capable suspension.

Flexed-Out Grand Cherokee
The guys at Jeeps R Us yanked out the stock suspension and outfitted the Grand Cherokee with a Clayton 6-inch long arm suspension kit with Bilstein 5100 series shocks as well as a slip yoke eliminator and sway bar disconnects. To make sure the rest of the Jeep's drivetrain was up to par, Jeeps R Us fabricated a new set of driveshafts strong enough to hold up to some trail wheeling action.

Jim wanted his Grand Cherokee to clear 35-inch tires-needless to say the sawzall came out and took care of that problem pretty fast. Fender clearance is one of the biggest issues with Cherokees but thankfully it wasn't an issue in Jim's case. The Iceland Off Road Go Berserk cut-out fender flares made tire clearance a thing of the past while giving the Grand Cherokee an aggressive, all business look.

The Jeep's newfound suspension flex impressed us while off-road. It might be one of the smoothest-riding long arm kits on the market, and the Jeep managed to get some decent suspension flex climbing over obstacles.

  • Iceland Off Road's Go Berserk cut-out fender flares allow the use of a bigger tire without having to go to a bigger lift. The fiberglass fenders bolt to the body extending out only 2.25 inches. The fender flares give the WJ a larger cleaner look while accentuating its clean body lines.

  • The WJ's front suspension allows the front Dana 30 to articulate over most obstacles, even without disconnecting the sway bar. Clayton Off Road long arms along with 6-inch lift coil springs and Bilstein 5100 series shocks give the Grand Cherokee enough flex to tuck the tires under full articulation. Unibody rails help reinforce the frame of the WJ and keep rocks from crunching them in. A Jeeps R Us heavy-duty driveshaft makes sure it can get through.
