If you caught a recent episode of Spike TV's new off-road television show, Xtreme 4x4, you may have watched the construction of the Pro Comp prerunner. This truck was built during the 4 Wheel Parts Truck Fest in July 2005 over two days. You heard me right - from stock to what you see today in 48 hours. Ian Johnson and Jesse Combs did a fantastic job assembling this '05 Ford F-150 4x4 SuperCab into a show-stunning, dirt-capable, off-road ride.
Typically when we are assigned to cover a feature vehicle in the magazine, we arrange a time and location to meet with the owner and proceed. This time around we were handed the keys to the truck for a week to not only photograph this work of art but also gain firsthand experience to determine if this truck was more than just a billboard. Looking over the front of this Ford, you will find a slew of Pro Comp protection equipment including the company's stainless steel skidplate, fabricated front light bar and bumper, and a roof rack with an integrated light bar. With seven Pro Comp 8-inch off-road lights showering the road in the evening, we always felt secure during nighttime travels. In order to be sure this truck turned heads, a complete vehicle vinyl wrap was performed by APE Wraps, and a Street Scene Equipment front mesh grille gave the front that little extra bit of style. | The Pro Comp 6-inch F-150 suspension system includes drop-down brackets for the lower A-arms, sway bar, front axles, taller and stronger spindles, coilovers with external reservoirs for the front, and lift blocks with Pro Comp external reservoir shocks in the rear. After a few hours in the dirt, we noticed that our fears of the typical tall-truck woes slowly dissipated as the suspension soaked up everything in its path. | After a week behind the wheel, we can confidently say that we were impressed with the capabilities of this prerunner. Although at first glance it appears to be yet another rolling advertisement, it provided us with a great deal of dirty fun as well. If you want to see the truck in person, be sure to visit one of the many upcoming 4 Wheel Parts Truck Fests around the country. |
Next to a trick suspension system, the next thing on most off-roaders' wish lists would be engine performance goodies. Popping open the hood, we found JBA ceramic-coated headers, a K&N FIPK Series 77 intake kit, a Pro Comp performance off-road battery, and connections that lead to a Hypertech Power Programmer which provides a boost of vertical pedal goodness. Stuffed into the rear pumpkin you will find Genuine Gear 4.56 ring-and-pinion gears with an Auburn limited-slip differential unit. The front housing holds an equal set of gears with Auburn's Ected differential. To stop this beast, Baer EradiSpeed rotors and pads have been added. Shooting out the back is a MagnaFlow stainless steel after-cat exhaust system. |

Upgrading to an external reservoir shock will improve your truck's performance significantly because of increased damping ability and shock cooling. | Sway bars are a frequently overlooked item with many suspension systems on the market today. They provide much needed stability, especially when you take a fullsize heavy truck and raise its center of gravity over 6 inches. |
Rear traction bars are an added bonus to any truck that sees the dirt. Think about how much force is exerted through your truck's rear end when you mash the throttle to the floor sending your rear into a sideways skid. Traction bars help keep the geometry of the suspension and truck in line to assure that you don't leave parts behind you. | Pro Comp Xtreme All Terrain 37x13.50R18 tires have been installed covering a set of black 18x9 Pro Comp Xtreme Alloy 8079 simulated beadlock wheels. | No good prerunner is ready to hit the dirt without spare tires. Two fullsize tires are mounted to a Pro Comp fabricated dual spare tire carrier bolted to the bed floor with a Power Tank air tank ready for quick, on-the-go air-ups. |
The stainless steel skidplate provided much needed protection through some of the more challenging terrain we threw at the truck. | | MasterCraft race seats and harnesses keep all occupants firmly planted to their seats through even the toughest obstacles. |
