2004 Ford F-150 4x2 SuperCrew - 20-Day Wonder

This '04 F-150 Turns Into A Hard-Core Prerunner In Less Than A Month

Photography by Phil Howell

Trail Ready is known in the rockcrawling and trail-riding world for its superb, high-quality bead-lock wheels. As a marketing aid for the company's new series of bead-lock wheels for desert and short-course trucks, Trailready decided to build a prerunner that was equally at home blasting across the desert as a race-support vehicle or driving on pavement as a daily driver. Can't be done, you say? The TrailReady crew did it. And in 20 days, no less.

An '04 Ford F-150 4x2 SuperCrew was chosen as the base truck because of its strong frame and, well, Larry, the owner of TrailReady, likes it. It came with the 5.4L V-8 and automatic transmission. The new F-150 arrived on January 1, 2005. TrailReady began ordering parts, and by January 18, the truck was just about complete and on its way to its first off-road show.

We had a chance to ride in the truck during the photo shoot and can say its off-road performance is superb. We have a favorite jump over a cattle guard that works great for launching most vehicles we photograph. The 20-Day Wonder F-150 only got about 8 inches off the ground, even at speeds above 70 mph, because of the suspension travel it has. The most surprising thing, though, is that Larry drove the truck to Southern Utah from Seattle, then drove it back.

Check out the photos and see some of the details on this great truck
