When the first wave of Hummer H2s hit the annual SEMA convention, many folks in the custom-truck industry looked downward, opting for 22- to 26-inch wheel and tire packages and a lowered stance for their custom projects. That's all well and good, but that isn't the look that creams our Twinkies. Thankfully, companies such as Fabtech saw the H2 as an opportunity to build a unique, go-anywhere SUV instead of a garden-variety street cruiser. Looking to the sky and its own kick-ass line of suspension products for inspiration, Fabtech set about putting the H2 up in the air while creating an even better, more functional SUV.
The backbone of H2 Heat is Fabtech's new 6-inch performance suspension system. Because the H2's suspension is a radical departure from that of the H1 (the H2 has torsion bars), Fabtech was able to lift the front of this beast using its proven knuckle and drop-down crossmember technology. The new crossmembers maintain optimal front-differential and control-arm geometry for maximum traction in the dirt. As a bonus, the new crossmembers also serve as attachment points for Fabtech's new full-length skidplate system. The front suspension is also outfitted with - drumroll - six Fabtech dampers! The original damper mounting points are fitted with one pair of dampers and Fabtech's optional dual upper shock hoops. The H2's factory five-link rear suspension is a durable design, which Fabtech improved upon with new coil springs, track bar drop-down brackets, and extended antisway bar end links. The kit puts enough air between H2 Heat's wheelwells and Mother Earth to clear the 37X14R18 Nitto Terra Grappler tires and 18X10-inch KMC XD wheels.
In addition to the suspension upgrades, Fabtech chose to create a soothing environment within. The first round of changes involved replacing some of the stock interior parts. Custom carbon-fiber overlays from Deco Tech were installed over the dash, the center console, and overhead consoles. The factory leather seating was also altered by 714 Motorsports with carbon-fiber-patterned, black-leather inserts. The door panels also received the same carbon-fiber treatment. A 4,000-watt audio and video system is onboard to entertain passengers during long trips. A pair of Xtant Amplifiers, which fire a variety of subwoofers and component speaker systems, amplifies the system. Advanced Vehicle Specialty built a custom enclosure for the 12-inch subwoofers and placed them into the factory cargo-panel areas. A Visonik DVD player is coupled to three separate LCD display screens that are installed within the seat headrests and the headliner. The combination of all the above makes for a seriously comfortable seating area with all the entertainment the passengers could ask for.
Fabtech continues to push the envelope, developing suspension parts for all of the newest trucks and SUVs. H2 Heat is a prime example of what the company is capable of and a glimpse into the future of off-roading. With a look all its own, tons of creature comforts on command, and a killer stance, this Hummer is sure to be a crowd pleaser.
