Robert Wilson, the owner of this '01 F-150 two-wheel-drive SuperCrew is no stranger to customized vehicles. In fact, for Robert, the owner of Modern Image Sign Works of Huntington Beach, California, customizing vehicles is his business. His company is responsible for creating some of the hottest vinyl graphics in the industry, gracing the sides of some of the trickest imports to ever hit the streets. So why not choose to build a vehicle such as those that his business caters to? Let's just say that Robert has decided to broaden his scope of vehicles to include some of the best-selling trucks on the market today as well. "I couldn't think of a better-looking truck to use as a rolling showroom than my brand-new Ford," he told us.
Knowing that the key to attracting attention on the streets and trails (for Robert, the sand dunes of Glamis) is an in-your-face rig, Robert did his homework and called upon Fabtech Motorsports to install its new 7-inch long-travel, two-wheel-drive suspension lift kit. With the frontend sitting in another atmosphere, the rear was leveled off with Fabtech's 2-inch kit. To soften the ride yet retain a fully adjustable ride quality, a custom front engine cage was fabricated so that dual front, adjustable Fox Racing shocks with external reservoirs could be bolted in place. Bringing up the rear were single Fox units. Upon completion of the lift, the SuperCrew's factory rubber was replaced with massive 315/75/16 Yokohama Geolander M/T tires wrapped around 16x8 chromed TSW Tracker aluminum wheels.
Sparing no expense on his customizing experience, Robert's next area of focus was the factory 5.4L Ford V-8. By no means dissatisfied with the power output of the factory engine, Robert had what could be billed as a need for speed. Providing him with his need for speed, MagnaCharger was more than willing to install its new top-of-the-line MagnaCharger Supercharger system to curb his appetite. The completed system provides a respectable 6 pounds of boost and a horsepower and torque increase of 40 percent, which is distributed evenly along the powerband. Of course, the 3-inch stainless steel, after-cat MagnaFlow exhaust system is just the proverbial icing on the cake for this rig. To assist with delivering the additional torque and horsepower to the tires, the factory 3.56 gears were replaced with a pair of 4.10s courtesy of PDC in Brea, California.
Since Robert's business is based solely on vehicle's exterior appearances, he knew that he had to come up with something truly unique and original. After a trip to his vehicle design studio, he emerged with a new attitude for the SuperCrew. A quick call to Glassworks Unlimited of Huntington Beach yielded Robert a new pair of fiberglass prerunner front fenders, which would later be installed and color-matched by Wet Works Garage in Stanton, California. For additional safety for the truck, the factory side mirrors were replaced with signal mirrors manufactured by Muth Mirrors, which have the turn signals incorporated into them. Adding to the emerging work of art, custom front and rear bumpers that accommodate a pair of 130-watt Explorer Pro Comp driving lights up front and a matching pair in the rear were fabricated by Twisted Tin of Westminster, California. Once completed, they were powdercoated candy blue by the crew at Specialized Powder Coating in Huntington Beach. The custom-designed end caps and front grille were creations of Wet Works Garage. Protecting the bed of the truck from any unnecessary roughness is a Line-X spray-in bedliner. To complete the rig's exterior, Robert created a set of custom candy blue, tribal vinyl graphics with matching decals to be installed by his expert staff on the truck's side. The finishing touch came when the stock corner lights were replaced with clear lenses from APC.
