There are two things that truck owners cannot seem to get enough of - more power and fuel economy. One of the best ways to get those two elusive items is to make sure that the fuel delivery system on your ride is working at its optimum capability. As with any essential part, the fuel system needs to be maintained. It needs to be periodically cleaned, and all of the important pieces need to be inspected and replaced if necessary.
Of the different types of fuel-injection systems, a throttle-body injection (TBI) system closely mimics a regular carburetor. It looks nearly identical to a regular carburetor, and except for the fact that instead of vacuum-pulling fuel from the bowl, flow is regulated with a computer and is introduced via a pair of injectors. Similar to a normal carburetor, the fuel then travels to the cylinders via an intake manifold.
That means that only two injectors are used to do the same duty as eight with another type of fuel-injection system. If that is the case, they had better be clean and operating at a maximum capacity.
This is where Sean Murphy of JET Performance Fuel Systems comes in. Murphy has many years of experience working with all types of fuel delivery systems, and he was the natural choice when this Chevy TBI needed to be overhauled.
In addition to cleaning and inspecting the injectors, Murphy fixed an engineering problem that exists with the Chevy jug. In a stock TBI unit, the throttle shaft is merely inserted into the body without the benefit of any bushings. This oversight can cause vacuum leaks or binding when the unit becomes worn. The fix will necessitate the complete dismantling of the unit and cause a little drilling to occur. This process is a must if your TBI-equipped truck has more than 50,000 miles on it or if you feel that the power and fuel mileage is down.
