Getting Official Is Tough Work!

They came, they launched, and they landed. That’s right, it happened. While there were a number of small battles to fight to make it go off, Huckfest became an official event in the Oceano Dunes State Vehicle Recreation Area (AKA Pismo Dunes), and did in fact go on with a great turnout this year.

In years past, many spectators—including us—would head out to the Pismo Dunes at the correct time, line up, and watch trucks huck themselves sky-high in an unofficial fly-for-all. It made the Dunes’ rangers queasy watching every truck fly, but luckily nothing bad ever came from a Huckfest gathering. This year, Johnny and Manual Garner and Chris Brown worked with the Oceano Dunes SVRA to get all the necessary permits, insurance, and volunteers to pull off a successful (and official) Huckfest that the rangers were happy with.

After experiencing a by-the-books event for the first time, the Huckfest team has an even bigger and better plan for next year’s show. Now we can’t wait for 2013!

  • The biggest jump belonged to Dustin “Whiskey and Kittens” Haning in his yellow Extreme sand rail. Unfortunately rails were not in the competition and Haning’s rail was the only one allowed to jump during Huckfest as the rangers wanted to keep it strictly trucks only. Sand rails fly like kites and are always fun to watch though.

  • Paul Hayslett was fun to watch as his clean but extremely modified single-cab Tacoma flew through the air time after time. He tied for first place.

  • Daniel Harrington’s Exploder did just that after one to many jumps. Quick help from a bunch of volunteers cleared the landing pad and got Harrington safely to the sidelines.
