Mile-High Dyno Action For The Cause

Powering Up for a Family in Need

Mile High Dyno Action For The Cause 1969 Chevy K20 Jacob Bonser

We normally don’t cover dyno events in OFF-ROAD magazine, but when we heard that the Colorado Diesel Truck Club was organizing a charity dyno event to raise funds for 10-year-old Morgan Wildman, who is battling brain cancer, we wanted to go out and show our support. Dyno events are usually about power and bragging rights, but this event was different. This event was about diesel-truck enthusiasts uniting to help a family during their time of need.

Morgan was first diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor when she was 8. After a brief period of remission, the cancer returned. As you can imagine, her family and friends have been doing everything they can to help her battle the cancer. It’s no surprise then that Shay Black of the Colorado Diesel Truck Club made some calls and organized a dyno event in Loveland, Colorado, to help pay for Morgan’s medical needs.

Jacob Bonser showed up with arguably one of the coolest ’69 Chevy K20‘s we’ve ever seen. We were a little bit envious when we realized his truck was powered by a 12-valve Cummins with dual stacks rolling on 42-inch Iroks. Despite the huge rubber, Jacob’s Chevy pumped out 329 hp and 852 lb-ft of earth-moving torque.

We weren’t sure what to expect when we showed up to Engle Automotive in Loveland, and we quickly realized how many truck owners were in attendance showing their support for the Wildmans. There must have been at least 100 trucks, with more people showing up to run their trucks half way through the event. Needless to say, the charity dyno event turned out to be a huge success thanks to all the supporters and enthusiasts who showed up for some dyno action. The Colorado Diesel Truck Club was able to raise more than $25,000, including BulletProof Diesel’s generous donation. We’re really glad to see that there are still plenty of caring individuals and companies who look at the big picture in life and are willing to help others in their time of need.

If you would like to help Morgan Wildman in her fight against cancer and show her the off-road community is rooting for her, please visit her Web page at www.caringbridge.org/visit/morganwildman.

Some of you might recognize this truck from our sister magazine, Diesel Power, as David Kennedy’s old ’97 Ford F-250 Power Stroke diesel. Tom Dody of Destroked now owns the truck and put it to good use as the 7.3L laid down 387 hp and 917 lb-ft of torque. The Power Stroke has more than enough power to pull heavy loads courtesy of a custom water/methanol injection system as well as a Borg Warner TP-38 Turbo that generates 32 psi of boost while still being able to use stock injectors. The 5-inch stack ensures all the exhaust is evacuated as quickly as possible.

Wide Open Performance built the 12-valve Cummins with a Scheid street camshaft, ported cylinder head with performance valve springs, H11 head studs, 13mm P-pump injection pump and Wide Open Performance’s triple turbo set up. Jacob tells us that the truck is capable of putting out 1,100 hp once they turn up the injection pump and boost pressures and we wouldn’t doubt it for a second. If only we could have three turbos in a go-fast off-road truck….

Tristan’s Ford featured Rosewood Diesel DIY stage 1 injectors, ATS intercooler and piping, AFE stage 2 1.0 Turbo exhaust housing, as well as Tony Wildman’s custom four-position tuning which help it produce 405 hp and 641 lb-ft of torque. Just in case he needs a little more power, the Cooling Mist stage 3 water/methanol injection adds a little extra kick to its step. Tristan tells us he’s been able to build this awesome truck thanks to his very understanding fiancée, Ashley, and his family who’s been there for those late-night wrenching sessions.

  • Mike Ontiveros brought out this clean ‘99 Ford F-250, which laid down the second-highest horsepower number of the day at 996 hp and 1,637 lb-ft of torque using nitrous and Mike’s own custom tuning. All that power is put to the ground via a beefed up BTS transmission, but make no mistake; this truck isn’t a trailer queen by any means.

  • Mike Haller’s 12-valve Cummins had the most menacing lumpy idle we have ever heard so it was no surprise it laid down the highest horsepower number of the day at 1,005 hp and 1,526 lb-ft of torque. What really impressed us is when Mike showed up with his mobile dyno that also doubles as a hauler for Mike’s 1,005-horsepower Ram.

  • Drew Marcum showed up with his 2001 Ford F-250 Crew Cab and spun the rollers on the Engle’s dyno to 386 hp and 754 lb-ft of torque. Drew’s Power Stroke Super Duty isn’t just built for the dyno rollers though, and regularly hits the trails near Fort Collins, Colorado.

  • Justin Turner’s two-tone grey and black ’97 Ford F-250 Power Stroke had some decent power under the hood and did not disappoint. The single 6-inch exhaust stack belched out a little smoke while the 7.3L pumped out 453 hp and 732 lb-ft of torque thanks to a DP Tuner and Rosewood Diesel Stage 2 injectors.

  • Jacob White of Wide Open Performance showed up with a wicked tri-turbo 12-valve Cummins Dodge Ram owned by Kirk Taylor of Rupert, Idaho. Even with the injection pump and boost turned all the way down, the triple-turbo Ram still managed to lay down 811 hp and 1,151 lb-ft of torque.

  • Michael Hainey entered his original Ford GT40 into the Show ‘N Shine competition and was nice enough to take Morgan for a joy ride in it. Some say the GT40 was the first true American super-car but all we can say is Morgan was thrilled to ride in it and was all smiles when she climbed out of the car. Morgan told us it was very hot and loud inside the car but that she loved the feeling when it went took off like a rocket.

  • Tristan Barr of Loveland, Colorado, was one of the hard-working guys strapping the trucks to the dyno all day long with hardly a break in between the 80-plus trucks that hit the dynos. Tristan brought out a clean example of an older body style ’97 Ford F-250. Make no mistake though; this Ford is a workhorse that regularly sees trailer duties all across the county to rodeo events.

  • Elite Diesel showed up with an awesome single cab 2011 Power Stroke F-250 rolling on 35-inch Nitto Trail Grappler M/Ts. There’s just something incredibly cool about a regular cab truck that can tow the heaviest of loads and still leave sports cars in the dust—even with 35-inch tires!
