The drag race was separated...
The drag race was separated into four classes: Street Stock, Stock, Renegade, and Open. Street Stock racer Jim (who was also the event DJ) raced his white Chevy against Tim Holt Jr. in his Ford F-150. Tim would end up taking home second place in his class.
By the time you finish reading this story and seeing all the airtime, we're guessing you'll be humming the Dukes of Hazzard theme song. Clearfield is located in the heart of Pennsylvania over 100 miles from any major cities. So, what do you do for fun way out here? Hit the dirt of course! Borrowing Freedom Raceway is a private property corn and hay field that turns itself into a drag strip, obstacle course, ATV barrel race, and even a corn maze for the kids during parts of the year. We snapped more than 1,000 pictures of racing, breaking, smashing, and splashing, as well as some local flavor - which made it hard to choose the photos that went in this story. With that said, enjoy the shots! We hope one day to make it back out to PA for another event.
Dawn Holt (aka Mom) and her...
Dawn Holt (aka Mom) and her black Suzuki Grand Vitara took on Brian Knepp and his "well used" Ford Explorer. The Ford didn't stand a chance. Who said they don't race Grand Vitara's off road?
Editor's Note We want to send a special thanks to Brian Stucke for showing us a really great time in Clearfield. We met some extremely nice people and got to experience what good ol' boy racing is all about. If you were competing in the event and we failed to include you in the article, we apologize. There was so much good action from the day it was hard to choose only a few images to use. If you would like to participate in some races at Borrowing Freedom Raceway, you can check it out at www.borrowing-freedom-inc.com.
Although, it looks like Jim... Although, it looks like Jim Ricotta's "Mud Rat" Chevy is going to beat Tim Howard's Chevy S-10, the Mud Rat ended up getting beat by a few hairs. Jim took home second place in Renegade Class while Tim cleaned up with the victory. Jim also competed in the Open Class taking home third place. | Intermission entertainment... Intermission entertainment included a wheelie demonstration put on by this fashionable rider. We aren't sure what kind of muskrat is stapled to his lid but it sure did bring that Joe Dirt feeling to life. Dang! | It's not often you see a Jeep... It's not often you see a Jeep Wrangler lined up in a drag race versus a GMC Suburban on 22s. Dustin Holtz's Jeep gave Baily Reams' GMC a run for its money but Baily ended up taking home third in class. |
If you had to slap a name... If you had to slap a name on this truck it would be Angry. Glenn Mack's big, green Chevy was really fast but sadly broke a driveshaft on his first run which ended his day. Maybe that giant wing on the back was providing too much downward wind force. | I wonder if the Simpsons know... I wonder if the Simpsons know the true meaning of Bart's name? | "Badass" Kevin Smith pulled... "Badass" Kevin Smith pulled a good lead on Jerry Harris, taking home top honors in the Open Class. That was one lean, mean, green fighting-machine Jeep. |
Lightning-fast Brent Chronister... Lightning-fast Brent Chronister took home first place in Street Stock in his Z71 Chevy. The Z71's big motor proved to be more than anyone else could handle. | The drag race was fun, but... The drag race was fun, but the obstacle course is what the fans really came to see. How could you not love watching big old trucks flying through the air, slamming into the ground and shooting mud through the turns? Dan Rudy pushed his Chevy Blazer to its limit in the Stock Class. | Steve Weaver's Ford was a... Steve Weaver's Ford was a hit, not because he got the most air, but because of the amazing amounts of duct tape found littering his truck's body. |
Roaring 700-plus horsepower... Roaring 700-plus horsepower engines are always the highlight of a drag race. Jerry "Mr. Quik" Harris shot a good 50-foot roost during a pass on the 300-foot course. He went neck and neck with Kevin Smith until a mechanical issue ended his day leaving him in second place. | If you're gonna race, might... If you're gonna race, might as well go like bunnies, right? | Stock Class competitor Tim... Stock Class competitor Tim Holt Sr. purchased this F-150 for $150. Putting absolutely zero more dollars into it, he took home second place honors in the Stock Class. It defines the "run what ya' brung" attitude. |
We would like a little privacy... We would like a little privacy please. | It's a shame we don't have... It's a shame we don't have video of Billi Jo Green's (yes, she's a girl) Ford hammering through this mud hole. The bed was so loose it looked elastic flapping around in the air. Billi Jo took second in the Ladies Class and Travis Hammond drove her truck in the Stock Class and took home third place. | The Limited Modified Class... The Limited Modified Class title went to Duck Sollenberger and his bright orange Chevy. |
